I remember feeling like I was drowning in bills and not knowing where to turn for help. But with some trial and error, and a lot of research, I was able to find ways to save money on my bills and get my finances under control.

In this article, I want to share some of the tips and strategies that helped me navigate the “real world” financially after graduating from college. Whether you are just starting out or have been out of school for a while, I hope these tips will help you save money on your monthly bills and achieve financial stability and security.

Saving money on your monthly bills can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. By making a few small changes and being proactive, you can easily reduce your expenses and keep more money in your pocket.

Save Money on Your Monthly Bills

Continue reading to see my best tips and tricks to save on those monthly bills.

Shop around for the best rates

One of the easiest ways to save money on your bills is to shop around and compare rates from different providers.

This can be especially beneficial for services such as internet, cable, insurance, and phone, as there are often many different options available.

Look for discounts and promotions

Be proactive! Many companies offer discounts or promotions to new customers, so it’s always worth checking to see if you are eligible for any special offers.

For example, you may be able to get a discounted rate on your internet or cable service if you bundle it with another service such as phone or home security.

Cut back on your usage

Another way to save money on your bills is to reduce your usage of certain services.

For example, if you find that you are paying a lot for electricity, you may want to consider switching to energy-efficient appliances or cutting back on your use of lights and electronics.

Similarly, if you are paying a lot for water, you may want to invest in low-flow showerheads and toilets to reduce your consumption.

Use coupons and cashback apps

Coupons and cashback apps can be a great way to save money on your bills and everyday expenses. These apps do take some work shopping around for the best deals, but it is worth it when you are trying to stretch every dollar.

Many apps offer discounts or cash back on a variety of products and services, including groceries, gas, and online purchases.

Here are our favorite coupon and cashback apps:

  1. Rakuten: This app allows you to earn cashback on your purchases from thousands of participating retailers. You can also find coupons and promo codes to use at checkout.
  1. Honey: Honey is a browser extension that automatically searches for and applies the best coupons and promo codes to your online purchases. It also offers cashback at select retailers.
  1. Ibotta: This app allows you to earn cashback on your purchases from a wide variety of retailers, including grocery stores, department stores, and online retailers. You can also find coupons and discounts to use at checkout.
  1. Shopkick: With Shopkick, you can earn rewards points (called “kicks”) for shopping at participating retailers, both online and in-store. You can redeem your kicks for gift cards, merchandise, and other rewards.
  1. Coupons.com: This app offers a wide range of coupons for groceries, household items, and more. You can find digital coupons to use at checkout or print coupons to use in-store.

Automate your payments

Automating my payments as well as my paycheck allocations has really given me a better grasp on my money.

By setting up automatic payments for your bills, you can help ensure that you never miss a payment and avoid late fees. Many companies offer discounts or other incentives for customers who set up automatic payments, so it’s worth checking to see if this is an option.

Just be sure to keep track of your finances on a website like Mint and make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the payments.

Consider switching to a prepaid plan

You may get steep discounts when you prepay. Prepaid plans can be a great option for those who have a hard time sticking to a budget or who don’t want to be tied to a long-term contract.

With a prepaid plan, you pay for your service upfront and can avoid overage charges or other fees. Just be aware that prepaid plans may not always offer the same rates or features as traditional plans, so it’s important to compare your options carefully.

Use a budgeting app or tool

I am all for budgeting apps, that is why I outlined my favorites.

A budgeting app or tool can be a helpful way to track your spending and identify areas where you may be able to save money.

Many apps allow you to connect your bank and credit card accounts and categorize your transactions automatically, making it easy to see where your money is going. Some apps even offer personalized recommendations or alerts to help you save money on your bills.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate

If you are having trouble affording your bills or are dissatisfied with the rates or services you are receiving or are frustrated with the rates or services you are receiving, don’t be afraid to speak up and negotiate for a better deal.

Many companies are willing to work with their customers to find a solution that works for everyone. Just be polite and respectful and be prepared to walk away if the provider is unwilling to meet your needs.

These are just a few tips that if followed, can help manage your finances as well as save you money on your monthly bills.

Remember to track your spending, set financial goals, and make informed financial decisions to help you stay on track and achieve your financial goals.
